How Liver Supplements Can Help You



The liver is one of the most important organs in the body; it is responsible for maintaining the quality of life through the maintenance of dietary functions and blood sugar levels. When it isn’t functioning at its best, liver supplements may be necessary to boost its functioning power.

Deficiencies of some vitamins, such as Vitamin A, D, and C can cause damage to the liver and its functions. One of the top causes of death in the United States is liver failure. This can be attributed to a lack of control over the diet and what is ingested. Alcohol and drug abuse can lead to liver damage that is irreversible and results in death.

The body uses both the liver and the kidney as filtering systems. An excess of fat accumulation in the liver cells is referred to as ‘fatty liver’ and is the non-alcoholic version of liver disease. The liver’s duties of cleaning and filtering of the blood cannot continue if ‘fatty liver’ is blocking its ability to do so.

There are several factors that can cause fatty liver. Obesity and high blood sugar, two prevalent conditions in the United States can cause fatty liver and other diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver and diabetes. A sedentary lifestyle with uncontrolled, excessive weight gain is often precursors to fatty liver or non-alcoholic liver disease (NALFD). Thankfully, there are simple, but important steps that can prevent NALFD, such as a healthy nutrition plan and some valuable supplements to help the liver function.

There are some basic nutrients that can play a large part in helping the liver to function properly. If they are not obtained by diet, they can be added through the use of supplements.

Minerals such as calcium, iron and sodium all have important functions in keeping the body balanced and functioning. When the liver is damaged, the calcium content typically decreases, making calcium supplements helpful for people with liver disease.

Excess vitamins can cause digestion problems in people without liver damage and so those with liver disease must watch their intake of vitamins. On the other hand, if the liver damage is severe the individual may need vitamin supplements to restore balance to the liver.

Proteins and amino acids are an important part of any nutrition plan. However, individuals with fatty liver disease need to replace animal protein with vegetable protein to prevent adding even more fat to the liver.

As shown here, the balance of vitamins, minerals, and proteins are important for a healthy liver. But, like a two-edged sword, an overabundance of these can be damaging. This is why it is important that a physician be involved in any liver supplementation program.
